Rock Outcrop Plant Research in Brazil: Revisiting Ecology, Evolution and Conservation

It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the Special Issue “Rock Outcrop Plant Research in Brazil: Revisiting Ecology, Evolution and Conservation” of Acta Botanica Brasilica.

This issue marks two decades since the historic publication of the special issue of the Brazilian Journal of Botany dedicated to rock outcrop vegetation in Brazil. Our goal is to revisit, twenty years later, the advances and challenges in studying the ecology, evolution, and conservation of plants from these unique environments.

As a first step, we invite interested authors to submit a letter of intent containing:

  • A provisional title;
  • A brief abstract or overview of the research/review (max. 250 words; in English, Spanish, or Portuguese);
  • One or two short sentences explaining why this research fits the scope of the Special Issue;
  • Names and affiliations of the authors, with links to their CVs or institutional webpages.

Letters of intent should be sent to the Guest Editors: Thuane Bochorny ([email protected]) and Luiza de Paula ([email protected]).

In the second stage, authors whose letters are accepted will be invited to submit the full manuscript. This submission will follow Acta Botanica Brasilica’s regular peer-review process and must comply with the Journal’s Author Guidelines. In the cover letter, authors should indicate that the manuscript is intended for the Special Issue.

  • Announcement of the Special Issue: October 10, 2025
  • Deadline for letters of intent: November 20, 2025
  • Notification of selected authors: December 8, 2025
  • Deadline for full manuscript submission: June 30, 2026
  • Online publication: continuous, upon acceptance

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Taxonomy, phylogeny, and biogeography
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Population genetics and phylogeography
  • Plant ecology
  • Morphophysiological adaptations
  • Conservation and public policy

Acta Botanica Brasilica is a non-profit journal published by the Brazilian Botanical Society (SBB). In an increasingly commercialized scientific landscape, where many journals prioritize profit and impose barriers to access and publication, it is crucial to support academic society-led journals. These journals play a central role in Open Science, expanding access to knowledge, encouraging ethical and transparent practices, and strengthening the visibility of national scientific production.

SBB members are entitled to publish one article per year free of charge, with no publication fees applied in this case.

However, since the journal is primarily funded through membership fees, publication costs cannot be fully covered by the annual budget. Therefore, for non-member authors, each accepted manuscript will have a publication fee of R$ 800.00. We kindly ask authors to consider potential sources of funding (research projects, institutions, scientific societies, or partner organizations) to support their publication.

It will be a great pleasure to receive contributions that reflect the advances, challenges, and future perspectives on Brazil’s rock outcrop flora, strengthening the visibility and significance of this field of research.

We look forward to receiving your letter of intent with great enthusiasm.
